Unit One, Chapter Seven - Ligands And Transition Metal Complexes Flashcards
What is a Lewis acid?
Metals.
This is because they accept electrons from ligands
What is a Lewis base?
Ligands.
This is because they donate electrons to the central metal atom
What is the difference between a monodentate and a hexadentate ligand?
Monodentate ligands form ONE co-ordinate bond to a metal atom or ion, whereas hexadentate ligands form SIX
What is a co-ordination number?
The number of dative covalent bonds from the ligand to the central metal ion or atom
How do ligands bond to metals?
By forming a co-ordinate bond (dative covalent bond) to the metal using their lone pair of electrons
Ligands can be classified as…
Monodentate, bidentate, etc up to hexadentate
What are ligands?
Electron donors, they may be negative ions or molecules with non-bonding pair of electrons
What is a complex?
A central metal ion or atom surrounded by ligands
