Unit One: Animalia Flashcards
1
Q
What are animals?
A
- Eukaryotes
- Multicellular
- Heterotrophs
- Lack cell wall
-Most are motile
2
Q
What are animals organized based on?
A
- Body Plans
- Levels of organization(simple => complex)
- Body symmetry
- Embryological development
- Segmentation
- Limbs
3
Q
What is the simplest level of organization?
A
- Cells are the simplest level
- Cells become specialized to form tissue
- Groups of tissue can form organs which can work together to form organ systems
4
Q
What are the three types of body symmetry?
A
- Bilateral symmetry. i.e. bird(most common)
- Radial symetry. i.e. starfish(lack head and back)
- Asymmetrical. i.e. sponges
5
Q
What do all animals have in common in term of embryological development?
A
All begin as a zygote(fertalized egg)
6
Q
What are segments?
A
- Repeating part of an animals body
- can have many similar or repeating sections
- i.e. head, thorax and abdomen of an insect
7
Q
What are limbs used for?
A
- Movement
- Defence
- Gathering sensory info
8
Q
What are animals with a backbone called?
A
Vertebrates(5% of all animalia)
9
Q
What are animals without a backbone called?
A
Invertebrates(95% of animalia)
10
Q
What is cephalization?
A
Development of a head with sensory organs.
