Unit one Flashcards
Anatomy
The study of structure and form
Physiology
The study of function
Metabolism
The sum of chemical reactions that occur within the body
Catabolic
When larger molecules break down into smaller molecules
Anabolic
When small molecules join together to form larger molecules
Homeostasis
Refers to the ability of an organism to maintain consistent internal environment
Negative feedback
The resulting action will always be in the opposite direction of the stimulus
Positive feedback
Reinforced to continue in the same direction until a climatic event occurs
Cytoskeleton
Central role in cell activity, intracellular structural support and cell division
Cilia
Are small hairlike projections extending from the exposed surfaces of some cells
Flagella
Similar to cilia but are longer and when present usually only one. Ex sperm
Ribosomes
Non membrane bound organelles containing protein and ribonucleic acid
Endoplasmic reticulum
An extensive interconnected membrane network that varies in shape but with one continuous lumen
Golgi complex
Composed of several elongated flattened saclike membranous structures called cisternae
Lysosomes
Are small, membranous sacs that contain digestive enzymes which are immersed in acidic fluid
