Loyalist
People who fled to Canada due to different political beliefs than of the American Revolution
Multiculturalism
- A government policy that guarantees all citizens their heritage, identity and language
Great Depression
In 1930-45, Canada suffered from low amount of immigration
CRTC
(Canadian Radio-television Telecommunication Commission) the government policy that requires radio and television stations to air Canadian content
Nuratulized Citizen
A permanent resident that has gone through Naturalization (process of becoming a citizen of a country)
Consumerism
The belief that happiness can be found in buying goods and services
First Nations
The original peoples of Canada. Often referred to as Indians by Europeans.
Assimilation
The process of absorbing one culture group into another so that the characteristics of the absorbed group if suppressed.
Quebec Act
Act that proclaims Quebec as an individual culture/country
Segregation
For a culture to be separated or divided from other cultures
Interrogation
Occurs when cultural groups preserve their own culture while still adopting parts of the dominant culture
Citizenship
Membership in a political community, such as a country, includes rights, duties and responsibilities
Pluralism
A shared belief in a mutual acceptance and respect for diverse, ethnic, racial, religious and social groups within society

The culture for ordinary people

Media that portrays the attitudes, values and beliefs of a country

Permanent Resident
A legal immigrant who is allowed to live and work in Canada but is not a Canadian citizen

Schools ran by the Canadian Government and Christian Churches to assimilate Aboriginal children into mainstream Canadian society

To go in different and to come the same as everyone else
Refugee
People who flee their country due to fear of persecution. May be caused by race, religion or political belief.
