Unit I Flashcards
Kennewick Man
The earliest human remains found in America. Gave evidence that people were in America earlier than scientists had originally thought.
First Hominids
The first hominids came from a common ancestor shared with the chimpanzees. They originated in Africa. The earliest form was australopithecus (about 2.5 million years ago) and then later they evolved into the Homo species, which there are many branches of
Last Hominids
The most recent hominids are the Homo Sapiens Sapiens or Cro-Magnon. They are different from earlier man, because they have larger brains and the ability to think ahead. These Hominids can be found all around the world. They left Africa and went into Eurasia and then later moved into Australia. The last place to be inhabited was the Americas.
DNA connection to other species
the modern human’s DNA is 98.4% similar to the DNA of a chimpanzee. This gives supporting evidence to the common shared ancestor
Evolution
Charles Darwin first noticed adaptation and evolution trends when he studied chimpanzees in a zoo and realized that they could be related to humans. He went to the Galapagos Islands and studied finches and how the ones with longer beaks could survive for longer. Through his studies he learned about Natural Selection– animals that adapted were more likely to mate and survive longer
Hominids
a word in reference to all humans and their ancestors. they walk on two legs, have bigger brains than chimpanzees, use tools, learn how to make fire
Lucy
earliest hominid ever found. australopithecus; found in Ethiopia; knee can lock; shorter arms; 39 inches tall; 3.5 million years ago; ape shaped face; small brain; no tool-making
Paleolithic Period
“The Old Stone Age” 2.5 million years ago until 8000 BCE. Innovations such as tool-making started off this time period
Homo Habilis
larger brain; smaller face and teeth than an australopithecus; longer arms and protruded face; East and South Africa; 2.4 million- 1.4 million years ago
Homo Erectus
1.9 million years ago; greater mobility, control fire, double brain size of earlier hominids
Homo Naledi
most recently found hominid in South Africa; shows early man could have had proper burials; found in a cave; these individuals lived 1.78 million 1.95 million years ago years ago; the species date back to 2.5-2.8 million years ago; small brains; near the species split; feet like humans; hands/fingers made for climbing
Settlements of major continents
originated in Africa; moved to Eurasia and had reached Israel by 100,000 BCE; 60,000 years ago Homo Sapiens reached Australia; arrival in America 10,000 BCE- 14,000 BCE
Beringia
the land bridge that humans walked across over the course of 50,000 years in order to reach the Americas. This land bridge is now underwater
Carbon 14
a way of measuring the carbon on an artifact to learn the time it dates back to
Neanderthal
thicker bones, longer skulls, protruded faces, differently shaped faces
