Margins: Blank areas between the edge of text and edge of the page. (default margins: 1” – page layout tab)
Portrait: Pages is taller than it is wide.
Landscape: Page is wider than it is tall
Mirror margin: Used in document with facing pages – such as magazine – where margins on left page are a mirror image of margins on the right page.
Gutter: Adds extra space to the left. top, or inside margin to allow for binding.
Section: Portion of a document that is separated from the rest of the document by section breaks.
Section breaks: Formatting marks that you insert in a document to show the end of a section. (right click the status bar to see your sections.)
Next Page Break: Begins a new section and moves the text following the break to the top of next page.
Next Page Break: Begins a new section and moves the text following the break to the top of next page.
Continuous Break: Begins a new section on same page.
Even Page Break: Begins a new section and moves the text following the break to the top of the next even-numbered page.
Odd Page Break: Begins a new section and moves the text following the break to the top of the next odd-numbered page.
Dividing a document into sections allow you to vary the layout of a document.
Automatic Page Break: (sort page break) allows you to continue typing on the next page when you reach the bottom.
Manual page break: (hard page break) allows you to insert manual page break before you get to the end of the page. (layout tabs – breaks button)
Widow: Prevents a page from beginning with just the last line of a paragraph.
Orphan: Prevents a page from ending with only the first line of a new paragraph.
Column break: Forces the text following the break to begin at the top of the next column.
Text Wrapping: Forces the text following the break to begin at the beginning of the next line.
Formatting in Columns: Often makes the text easier to read –
Field: Code that serves as a placeholder for data that changes in a document (such as page number.) (insert tab ads page numbers)
Quick parts: Items you can insert include fields, such as current date, author, title – will update automatically.
Header: Text or graphics that appears at the top of every page of a document.
Footer: Text or graphic that appears at the bottom of every page of a document. (use insert tab)
Building blocks: reusable pieces of formatted context or document parts – predesigned content.
Table: Grid of columns and rows of cells that you can fill text and graphics – good for illustrating text.
Cell: Box formed by the intersection of a column and row.
Borders: Lines that divide the columns and rows in a table.
Clips: Media files such as graphics, photos, sounds, movies, etc. (insert tab)
