Unit A - Section 3 Flashcards
What is the longer version of DNA
Deoxyribonucleic Acid
What is DNA
DNA is the inherited material responsible for variation. All living organisms contain DNA in their cells
Genetic code
Based on arranging the four chemical “letters” into “words” or instructions that describe how to make any particular organism
Chromosomes
To fit large amounts of DNA into their cells organisms arrange their DNA into packages. These packages r called chromosomes
How many chromosomes do humans have in their body
In each human cell nucleus contains 46 chromosomes
How many chromosomes does a dog have
A dog has 78 chromosomes
How many chromosomes does a cat have
A cat has 38 chromosomes
What is a gene
Uninterrupted segment of DNA which contains coded instructions
Mitosis
Occurs in the body cells of multicellular organisms and is responsible for the growth and cellular repair of a multicellular organism
Meiosis
A cell division that produces cells with half the DNA of a normal cell
Traits
Characteristics of a species
Purebred
A breeder who wishes to produce white cats should choose purebred parents: cats whose ancestors have produced only white offspring for several generations.
Hybrid
An individual produced by crossing two purebred parents that differ in a trait such as coat color is known as a hybrid
Where r genes located
Genes are located on the chromosomes
4 DNA words
Guanine G
Cytosine C
Adenine A
Thiamine T
