Unit A - Section 1 Flashcards
Species
A group of organisms that have the same structure and can reproduce with one another
Biological diversity
Refers to all types of organisms on earth
Ecosystem
In an ecosystem living things interact with other living and non living things in a shared environment
Population
When members of a species live in a specific area and share the same resources, these individuals form a population
Community
When populations of different species live in the same area form an community
Genus
biological classification ranking between family and species
Symbiosis
Another type of interdependence is called symbiosis (sym meaning together; biosis meaning living) which is an association between members of different species
Commensalism
One of the participating organisms benefits but the other does not. However there’s no harm done to the second organism
Mutualism
As the root word mutual suggests mutualism benefits both organisms
Parasitism
One organism benefits but the other one is harmed
Inter species competition
Happens when two or more species need the same resource
Niche
The term niche describes the role of an organism within the ecosystem.
What does an organisms niche include
An organisms niche describes what it eats, and what eats it. It’s habitat, nesting site or range. And the affect on both the populations
Resource partitioning
Dividing up the resource among them what is known as resource partitioning. Doesn’t always involve food.
Variability
Variation within a species is called variability
