Unit A: Mix and Flow of Matter Flashcards
Remeber this for finals
What does WHMIS stand for?
Workplace, Hazardous, Materials, Information, Systems
What is a Hazard Symbol?
A sign or symbol showing that there is a warning
What is fluid?
Anything that has no shape and can flow
What is a slurry?
A mixture of water and solids used to transport
What is the difference between Pure Substances and Mixture?
Pure Substance is made up of one type of substance while Mixture is made up of multiple substances
What is Mechanical Mixture?
You can visually see the different substances that make up the mixture
What’s another way to call a Mechanical Mixture?
Heterogeneous Mixture
What is a Solution?
A substance that looks like one mixture
What’s another way to call a Solution?
Homogeneous Mixture
Define suspension
A cloudy mixture in which droplets or tiny pieces of one substance are held within another substance.
What is a colloid?
Also a cloudy mixture, but the droplets or tiny pieces are so small that they do not separate out easily
What is concentration?
The amount of solute dissolve in a specific amount of solvent
What is the difference between Solute and Solvent?
The solute is the substance that dissolves while the Solvent is the substance that does the dissolving
What solution has a LARGE amount of solute in the solvent
Concentrated Solutions
What solution has a SMALL amount of solute in the solvent
Diluted Solutions
How do you measure concentration?
Units = g/mL
What is solubility?
The mass of solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent to form a saturated solution at a given temperature.
What is an Unsaturated solution?
solutions in which more solute can dissolve
What is a Saturated
are solutions in which solute can dissolve at a given temperature.
Solubility depends on at least 3 factors. Can you name them all?
Type of solute, Type of solvent, Temperature
What is viscosity?
A measure of how quickly a fluid flows
What’s the difference between High viscosity and Low viscosity?
Fluids with high viscosity do not flow as easily as fluids with a low viscosity.
How does temperature affect viscosity?
When the temperature increases the viscosity decreases
When the temperature decreases the viscosity increases
What is the definition of density?
The amount of matter in a given volume
What is the ratio for density?
Density (d) = Mass (m) / Volume (v)
Which fluid is an exception to states of matter vs. density?
WATER!
What happens when something is LESS dense than water?
It floats
What happens when something is MORE denser than water?
It sinks
What happens when something has the same density as water?
It will be suspended in the middle
For liquids density units are?
g / ml
For solids density units are?
g / cm3
What happens when the temperature decreases?
When the temperature decreases, density usually increases.
What happens when the temperature increases?
When the temperature increases, density usually decreases.
What is buoyancy?
The tendency of an object to float when placed in a fluid
What is the buoyant force?
When an object is in a liquid, the force of gravity pulls it down.
What is compressibility?
The extent to which a substance (3 states of matter) can be compressed by a force acting on it. Objects under compression tend to deform the shape.
