Missouri Compromise of 1820
It tried to balance the amount of free and slave states.
Setting the boundary at 36°30′ parallel.
Limiting slavery in the North
Missouri was admitted as a slave state, while Maine entered as a free state.
Missouri Compromise of 1850:
Slave trade banned in Washington D.C
California was admitted as a free state.
Stronger Fugitive Slave Law
Popular sovereignty in the remainder of the Mexican Cession.
The Dred Scott Case
Congress ruled that citizens weren’t property
Fort Sumter (1861) – First battle.
Why: After Lincoln’s presidential election, states begin to secede from the Union. There was a fort controlled by the Union, but it was on the property of the Confederates. Therefore, the confederates demanded the Union to surrender it, but refused to. As a result, shots were fired at the fort that started the Civil War.
Emancipation Proclamation (1863)
Freed enslaved people in Confederate states.
