What was the Mayflower Compact of 1620?
The first self-government agreement in America.
What was the Virginia House of Burgesses?
The first elected representative assembly.
What was Jamestown?
The first permanent English settlement in North America.
What was Plymouth?
The second colony settled by a group of Puritans aka pilgrims.
How was the New England Colonies economy like?
They relied on shipping, fishing, timber, trade.
How was the New England Colonies climate like?
They had cold winters and rocky soil (not suitable for farming).
How was the New England Colonies religon like?
They were heavily influenced by Puritanism, a religious movement seeking to “purify” the Church of England.
How was the New England Colonies government like?
They held town meetings (self-government).
How was the New England Colonies diversity like?
Among whites, three-fifths were English in ancestry, and another fifth was Scottish or Irish. The remainder was of Dutch, French, German, Swedish, or some other background.
How was the Middle Colonies economy like?
They were called the “breadbasket colonies.” They relied on wheat, oats, and barley.

It was milder than New England, good for farming.

Similar to N.E. colonies, they were mostly Dutch, English, Germans, and Quakers.

Large plantations with cash crops (tobacco, rice, indigo).

Hot, long growing seasons.
How was the Southern Colonies religon like?
They were led by Methodists, Baptists, and, to a lesser degree, Presbyterians.
How was the Southern Colonies government like?
House of Burgesses in Virginia (first representative gov’t in America).
How was the Southern Colonies diversity like?
Most people of the Southern colonies were English, there were small groups of Scots, Scotch-Irish, Germans, and others
