UNIT 10: RECONSTRUCTION ERA Flashcards
What Happened?
Andrew Johnson became president after Lincoln’s assassination and offered pardons as a part of his reconstruction plan.
The pardons meant that he forgave them for being rebellious and allowed them to regain their rights such as holding office, voting, owning their lands again, etc.
Many former confederates got their power back allowing them to pass laws that would try to deny African Americans rights. E.g.- Black codes.
Black Codes
Laws restricting Black rights.
Ku Klux Klan (KKK):
Used violence and terror to suppress Black’s political participation.
Sharecropping
Trapped many freedmen in a cycle of poverty and debt, similar to slavery.
Compromise of 1877
Rutherford B. Hayes became president in exchange for removing the federal troops. This compromise officially ended the Reconstruction.
