  • Similar to trickle-down economics, assumed that tax cuts for corporations meant businesses could grow and wages would increase
  • Reagan also promoted the deregulation of businesses, the use of private contractors, and decreasing spending on social programs
  • Most opponents argued (and the reality was) that his plan furthered the divide between the rich and the poor and led to increased corruption
  • Reagan was able to combat stagflation, but a recession followed his presidency and the national debt continued to increase

  • Gorbachev’s plans ultimately made the USSR weaker as citizens wanted their rights extended further now that they had a sample

* The United States was found to have sold weapons to Iran (an enemy of the US) and then used the money to fund the Nicaraguan Contra
* The Contra was planning to overthrow their commie government and also got money from the cocaine industry which undermined the war on drugs
* Reagan denied any ties to the affair, but Litenuent Colonel Oliver North confessed and said Reagan was connected to the affair
* Reagan was investigated but not changed, everyone else involved was charged though

* Both Reagan and the media reported on AIDS as a “gay man’s disease,” even though anyone could get AIDS, so heterosexuals didn’t take enough precautions

  • Dukanis was a Massachusetts governor and anti-death penalty, even gave life-sentenced prisoners furloughs for good behavior
  • One prisoner let out for a furlough murdered while he was out, leading to major controversies involving Dems not being hard enough on crime
  • At a presidential debate, Dukanis became infamous for saying he wouldn’t kill the rapist/murderer of his wife, sealing any chance of his election as his message was repeated heavily in Reagan’s campaign.

* The UN said they would act if Hussein didn’t withdraw, he chose not to so the US invaded
* The war ended in six weeks with a US victory, but Bush chose not to depose Hussein for some reason
* Last major war was Vietnam so the US wanted to ensure good treatment of veterans.

* Communism highly valued control and Marxist values, but these values fell as control loosened
* The US was able to weaken the Soviet Economy by isolating it from the rest of the world
* Gorbachev saw the need for reform and didn’t want to go to war, so he folded the Soviet Union
* Yugoslavia broke down along with the Soviet Union based on ethnic groups and became a series of independent nations

* Whitewater pocketed the money, so an investigation occurred to see if the Clintons were committing fraud
* The scandal got overshadowed when investigations uncovered Bill Clinton’s Affair

* While investigating the Whitewater scandal, reporters uncovered an affair between President Bill Clinton and White House intern Monica Lewinsky
* Clinton and Lewinsky both denied it, but Lewinsky confided the truth to multiple of her friends
* More women came forward about having affairs with Clinton, but his wife still stuck by his side
* A blue dress belonging to Lewinsky was found with a stain and was tested to be BILL CLINTON’S CUM
* Clinton was impeached in the House for perjury and immorality but wasn’t removed from office.

Election of 2000

A
  • George W. Bush (H. W. Bush’s son) was running against Al Gore (VP of Bill Clinton)
  • The election was incredibly close, with the final result coming to which candidate won Florida
  • Bush initially won by less than 1,000 votes, but Gore demanded a recount by hand
  • The districts asked to recount failed miserably, with extensions needing to be made after it was revealed thousands of ballots weren’t counted due to being filled out incorrectly.
  • The case went to the Supreme Court where a 5-4 decision decided to end the recount, putting the vote in W. Bush’s favor
  • Many voters for Gore were incredibly pissed, saying the election was won by “one vote” as supreme court justices were split by party lines

* Al-Quaeda hijacked 4 planes, crashing two into the twin towers and one into the Pentagon, marking the biggest attack on the US by casualties
* Orchestrated by Osama Bin Laden due to US presence in the Middle east and support of Israel
* One of the final times in US history where the entire US was united against a common enemy, but led to lots of anti-Muslim sentiment
