A

California was admitted as a free state.

Nebraska Act

A

-Repealed both compromises.
-Allowed the people to decide if the state should ban slavery or allow it. (popularly sovereignty)
IT ELIMINATED the restriction on slavery.
-It divided the remaining of the Louisiana Purchase.
-Since Kansas was going to vote for slavery, both the pro and anti-slavery groups rushed in settlers to vote.
-As a result, there were violent fights. This was known as “Bleeding Kansas.”

Fort Sumter (1861) – First battle.

A

Why: After Lincoln’s presidential election, states begin to secede from the Union. There was a fort controlled by the Union, but it was on the property of the Confederates. Therefore, the confederates demanded the Union to surrender it, but refused to. As a result, shots were fired at the fort that started the Civil War.
