Reasons for European Exploration
✔ GOD – Spread Christianity.
✔ GOLD – Find wealth and natural resources.
✔ GLORY – Gain fame and national power.
New England Colonies (MA, CT, RI, NH)
Economy: Shipping, fishing, timber, trade.
Climate: Cold winters, rocky soil (not suitable for farming).
Religion: Puritans wanted religious freedom but were strict.
Government: Town meetings (self-government)
Middle Colonies (NY, PA, NJ, DE)
Economy: “Breadbasket Colonies” – Grew wheat, oats, and barley.
Climate: Milder than New England, good for farming.

Economy: Large plantations with cash crops (tobacco, rice, indigo).
Climate: Hot, long growing seasons.
Labor: Slavery was used heavily for plantation work.
Government: House of Burgesses in Virginia (first representative gov’t in America).
