What were the weakness of the Article of Confederation?
✔ No power to tax = No money!
✔ No executive branch = No president!
✔ No national military = States had their own militias.
✔ Only one branch (Legislative) = No checks and balances!
Shay’s Rebellion
A rebellion led by a group of angry farmers who were against the taxes. This rebellion showed the need for a stronger government.
What was the Great Compromise?
Created a bicameral legislature with the Senate having 2 representatives per state and the House based on population.
What was the Three-Fifths Compromise?
Counted enslaved people as 3/5 of a person for representation.
What is the Northwest Ordinance?
The process for admitting new states to the U.S. with a population requirement of 60,000 settlers; territories govern themselves.
What are the three branches of government?
Legislative makes laws (Congress), Executive enforces laws (President), Judicial interprets laws (Supreme Court).
What is the Bill of Rights?
The first 10 amendments to the Constitution that protect individual rights.
