What was the Second Great Awakening?

A

A period of time that encouraged religious belief. It sparked many other movements that fought for a greater society.

What did the abolitionists want?

A

Abolitionists wanted to end slavery, believing it as a moral, and religious injustice. Some examples are conductors on the Underground Railroad, and writers from newspapers such as The North Star, and The Liberator, which exposed slavery and its horrors.

A

Called for female equality. An important issue was female suffrage.

A

Called for greater education, believing that a society with knowledge for general life would prosper.

The prison reform

A

Before, prisons were just a place where all criminals (from the thief’s to the murderers) would be put. After reform, different degrees of criminals would be put in different areas. Rather than merely punishing inmates, prisons would aim to reform criminals into law-abiding citizens.
