Unit 10 (Reconstruction) Flashcards
What event caused the Reconstruction era?
The union’s victory in the Civil War.
What were some things being “reconstructed” during this era?
Freedmens’ (former slaves) rights, social connection between the north and south, and economic ties
What were the laws that restricted former slave rights?
Black Codes
What did the north do to respond to the south’s Black Codes, and what did the south do to get around it?
Created an amendment that states every American male is equal
The south indirectly attacked Freedmen by doing things such as adding fines or literature tests to things like voting polls, to where most former slaves couldn’t afford to complete.
What was the 13th,14th, and 15th amendment amendment?
Abolished slavery for all slaves, gave all Americans equal treatment in all legal aspects, and gave voting rights to African American males.
What is sharecropping?
Sharecropping was a system that many poor people (including former slaves) were trapped in a cycle of debt, where they would borrow goods to farm, only to not make enough, therefore needing to work more.
What did the Freedmen’s Bureau do?
Supported freed slaves by providing them with necessities, such as food, and education, in order to integrate them into society.
