Unit 8 - Ecology Flashcards
How do organisms respond to changes in the environment?
through behavioral and physiological mechanisms
What are examples of behavioral mechanisms?
taxis and kinesis
migration
What are examples of physiological mechanisms?
- hibernation/ estivation
- circadian rhythms
- phototropism
- photoperiodism
Taxis
a type of movement behavior in organisms where they move toward or away from a stimulus
What is a stimulus?
a signal or change in the environment
Positive taxis
movement towards a stimulus (ex. flies moving to a light)
Negative Taxis
movement away from a stimulus (ockroach running away when you turn on a light)
What is a receptor?
the part of an organism that detects the stimulus
What are the 2 types of taxis?
phototaxis and chemotaxis
Phototaxis
light taxis
Chemotaxis
immune so movement towards or away from chemical
