Mitosis Vs. Meiosis Flashcards
What is produced in mitosis?
2 genetically identical cells
What is produced in meiosis?
produces gametes but in the end produces 4 genetically different haploid cells
Both Mitosis and Meiosis start with what type of cells?
diploid cells so 2n meaning they have 2 sets of chromosomes
Is interphase part of meiosis or mitosis?
no it comes before because the chromosomes are duplicated before we start
What happens in prophase of mitosis?
- the nuclear envelope breaks down and the chromosomes condense making them visible
- centrioles are moving to the poles of the cell
What happens in metaphase of mitosis?
centrioles connect spindle fibers to the chromosomes and then the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
What happens in anaphase of mitosis?
the chromatids are pulled away by the spindle fibers and they move to opposite sides of the poll and they are identical
What happens in telophase of mitosis?
nuclear envelope reforms and the chromosomes uncondense
What happens in prophase 1 of meiosis?
chromosomes are actually matching up with their homologous pairs and and chromosomes are exchanging genetic information by crossing over
