What is the Pharynx?
Throat
Transmits solid food, liquid, air
What is the esophagus?
Muscular tube about 0.8 inches in diameter that connects pharynx to stomach
What is rugae?
Accordion like folds in stomach muscle wall that allow expansion to almost 0.5 gallons
What is peristalsis?
The wave like action of food being pushed down the esophagus
What is emulsification?
When bile turns big fat particles into smaller fat particles
What two liquids does the stomach hold to break down food?
Pepsin and Hydrochloric acid
What substance breaks down sugar in the mouth?
Saliva Amuglase
What is the valve that enters the stomach and the valve that exits the stomach called?
Enters- Cardiac Valve
Exits- Pyloric Sphincter
What three organs connect to the duodenum?
Pancreas, Liver, Gall bladder
What are the 3 functions of the stomach?
- Secretes gastric juices
- Secretes mucus
- Absorption of some substances (alcohol)
What are the 4 functions of the liver? (The largest organ)
- Regulates body metabolism
- Detoxifies alcohol
- Is a large reservoir of blood
- Produces bile which aids in digestion of fat
