Who were the Bantu people?
They started in the West and migrated South and East. They followed the rivers and met many kinds of people who helped them. They taught people their skills in ironworking, farming, fishing, as well as their religion and language.
What were the Slave Wars?
Slave traders bribed and payed Africa tribes to go at war with one another and the losers were forced to come to America and serve as slaves. Eventually, this spread to everybody and the Africans suffered a loss of their heritage and freedom. They were cut off from their people and their history.
Ethnic Groups and Traditions
- over 3,000 ethnic groups in the region
- helped develop traditions of art, religion, and music (American jazz)
- Oral history is still passed down generations
Effects of Slavery On African Tribes
- They lost their freedom and heritage
- Lost their sense of identity
- There was no one to tell them who they really were
- However, oral tradition still kept their history alive
What was the Berlin Conference?
- A meeting about Africa held in Berlin, Germany
- No Africans were allowed to attend this meeting
- Africa was divided into colonies each ruled by a foreigner
- In 1914 the continent was colonized by latitude and longitude.
What were the people of the Berlin Conference looking for?

What country was the last in Africa to gain its independence?
Eritrea gained its independence in 1993.
Why do many countries in this region have continual civil wars?
Most African nations have dictatorship occurring, and civil wars occur because groups are still struggling to gain control of their country even after independence.
What is an escarpment?
steep cliffs or slopes between higher and lower land surfaces.
What is an apartheid?
A policy of strict separation of races adopted where only whites could vote.
Who was Nelson Mandela?
Mandela was the first black president in any nation in Africa. He was jailed for 26 years and in the year he was freed, he was voted president.
His platform:
“ One man, one vote!”
