Unit 7: Intro to Fluid Handling Technology Flashcards

Q

How to deal with Piping Expansion?

A

As pipe is heated, it will expand in length. This causes stress on the piping components and must be allowed to expand without potential for failure.

Expansion bends: act as a spring. The pipes are fabricated with special bends which allows them to move. Good for high pressure as there is little risk of leakage. But requires more space.

Expansion Joints:
A) Slip expansion joints: two flanges let pipes slide in or out to allow for thermal expansion.
B) Corrugated Expansion Joint: Can expand with the help of corrugated sections that allows for movement absorption.

Corrugated means molded into tight ridges and valleys. … Materials are put into a corrugated shape to ensure elasticity and strength

Steam Separator

A

Removes condensate and moisture from steam by changing its direction rapidly or creating a whirling motion. The moisture or other particles are heavier then steam and cannot change direction as fast as the steam. If condensate is not removed from the steam piping it can cause water hammer.

Q

Water Hammer

A

Water hammer is a phenomenon that can occur in any steam piping system where condensate build-up and can block the pathway of steam. The steam now surrounded by condensate turns into water and creates a void. This void or inrushing of water causes a bang or shock wave. Higher steam pressures create larger pressure differentials under these same conditions and can cause shattered pipes and damage equipment.

Q

Steam Trap Installation Requirements

A

Steam trap is installed below the lowest point in the system after the piping system has been cleaned. A sediment filter is always installed just before the trap. A bypass line with a globe valve is also installed just in case the trap goes out of service.

Q

Butt Weld

A

Butt welding is when two pieces of metal pipes are joined together within the same plane. This method requires some preparation and is used mostly for thin metal sheets,

Q

How do Grease Traps work?

A

Grease traps work on the basic principal that FOG’s float on water and solid particles sink. Baffles within the trap slow the inflow of wastewater from the kitchen sinks. This allows for a settlement period where the separation of oils, water and food particles within the unit.

Q

Gate Valve

A

Generqlly used for isolation of equipment. Offer very little resistance to flow and can not be used to throttle flow or control it due to wire drawing.

A

Erosion of valve discs and seats due to being partially open while a fast-moving fluid is moving through the pipe.

Q

Globe Valves

A

Geberally used for throttling flow. Fluid must change direction going through it twice. So its offers a decent amount of fluid resistance but its very good for throttling flow.
