Unit 4: Plant & Fire Safety Flashcards
What level of noise exposure should hearing protection started to be worn?
When sound pressure levels are 80 dB or louder
Why should you not paint protective headwear?
It can weaken the headwear
Arc Flash
is a type of electrical explosion that occurs when electrical energy passes from a high voltage source through the air to a low voltage conductor
PPE
Personal Protective Equipment
SDS
Safety Data Sheet: is prepared by manufacturer of product and provides a detailed description of the hazardous materials inside of a product.
When is fall protection required?
When a worker may fall 3 meters or more or when there is unusual risk of injury if a worker falls less than 3 meters.
Filter type Respirators
Protect against dusts, mists, toxic dusts,
SCBA
Self Contained Breathing Apparatus
SAR
Supplied Air Respirator
OH&S
Occupational Health & Safety Programs: a plan of action to prevent work related accidents, respond to emergencies, and identify/control hazards
CSE
Confined Space Entry: are enclosed or partially enclosed spaces that is not intended for human occupancy except for work orders, and may become dangerous to any person entering.
WHMIS
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
Key Components of WHMIS?
1) Hazard Classifications
2) Labelling Requirements
3) Safety Data Sheets provided by manufacturers
4) Worker Training programs
What are Safe Work Permits?
Is a written agreement between the worker and the company representative issuing the permit. They are designed to ensure potentially hazardous work can be carried out safely. Both the worker and rep look over the SWPs terms and will sign off on the terms if agreeable; at this point it becomes a legal document.
Elements of a SWP can include:
1) Lockout requirements
2) Atmospheric testing
3) PPE requirements
4) Additional Permits Required (Confined Space/Hot Work)
What is Cold Work Permit?
For general maintenance that does not generate an ignition source. No fire hazards present. May be required under a safe work permit
What is a Hot Work Permit?
Any work that produces a fire hazard or ignition source (welding, electric drills, camera flashes)
CSE Permit
Confined Space Entry Permit
What type of employee training does WHMIS require?
Safe use of materials on site proper labeling Proper use of PPE Location of safety equipment Location of SDS
Safe Handling of Gas Cylinders?
Do not drop
Do not Roll
Keep metal cap on to protect valve
Keep cylinder up right
Where to Keep Gas Cylinders?
Keep outside when possible
Flash Point
is the lowest temperature at which a liquid such as hydrocarbon fluids produces sufficient vapor to form a flammable mixture of vapor and air, immediately above the liquid’s surface.
What is Combustion?
Combustion is defined as an exothermic reaction (Gives off heat). This self-sustaining reaction involves a solid, liquid or gaseous fuel.
Oxidizing Agent
Anything the provides oxygen to combustion or chemical reaction
reducing agent
Is any combustible material. A reducing agent is an element or compound that loses or “donates” an electron to an electron recipient in a redox chemical reaction. Such as fuels that give up electrons during combustion.
Four Components Required for a fire?
1) Fuel (reducing agent)
2) Oxygen (Oxidizing agent)
3) Ignition (Heat or certain temperature that allows for combustion to occur)
4) Self-Sustaining Chain reaction
In order to extinguish a fire you only have to remove one of those aspects
How to REACT to a fire?
Remove people from immediate danger Ensure doors are closed Activate the alarm Call the fire department Try to extinguish the fire (only if safe to do so)
Class A Fire
Consist of ordinary combustible materials such as:
1) Wood
2) Cloth
3) Paper
4) Plastics
5) rubber
Class B Fire
Involve combustible liquids such as:
1) Oil
2) Gasoline
Does not include Cooking oils
Class C Fires
are electrical fires
Class D Fires
Involves the combustion of metals
Class K Fires
Involve any fires inside of kitchens
Animal fats
greases
What Class of Fire is Water used on?
Class A
What Class of Fire is CO2 used on?
Removes oxygen from air so is used on Class B and Class C fires
What Class of Fire are Dry Chemicals used on?
Classes B, C and sometimes A
What Class of Fire are Wet Chemicals used on?
Class K fires and sometimes Class A
What Class of Fire is extinguished by Aqueous Film Forming Foam?
This soapy water foam not only uses water but can suffocate the fire. So it can be used in Class A and Class B fires
What Class of Fire is extinguished by Dry Powders?
Class D fires
What level is an oxygen rich environment?
At or above 22% oxygen in the environment
