Unit 6 Test Flashcards
Epithelia tissue: (made of and partial function)
Stratified squamous, waterproofed from keratin
1st line of defense when not compromised
The skin
What serve as portal of entry to the dermis?
Pores
Dermis contains:
hair follicles, sweat glands, oil glands
Perspirations contains:
salt, lysozyme (antibacterial), antimicrobial peptides
Sebum:
oil (nutritive for some microbes)
Mucus membranes:
Line cavities that open to the outside,
are often acidic for protective purposes,
Mucus membranes of the eyes:
are washed with tears which contain lysozyme (antibacterial)
Normal microbiota: on the skin,
must survive drying and increased salt concentrations
microbiota on the skin
Usually G+
S. epidermidis, M. luteus
microbes in the sweat glands:
will reestablish colonies in a matter of hours, (
increase in microbes on skin)–handwashing lab
microbes in axilla and groin
metabolize the lipids and proteins on the skin, creating body odor
Diphtheroids:
G+ pleomorphic (more than one shape,
Proprionbacterium acnes, which creates acne,
Corynebacterium xerosis
Dandruff:
fungal infection of the scalp
Skin Lesions (Vesicle)
Small, flat lesion with fluid
Bullae
Vesicle greater than 1cm
Macule:
flattened red lesion
Papule
raised lesion
Pustule:
papule that contains pus
Staphylococcal categories
Coagulase+ or Coagulaese-
S. epidermis:
common on skin and can become pathogenic (common during catheter use due to the formation of biofilms.
S. aureus:
Common in nasal passages and has pigment to protect from UV light,
coagulase+, produces enterotoxins, blocks chemotaxis, resistant to opsonization, neutralizes defense, lysozyme resistant
Folliculitis:
inflammation of hair follicle (pimple)
Sty:
Staph infection of the eyelash
