LAB 2 exam Flashcards
site of fetal development
uterus
copulatory canal
vagina
“fertilized egg” typically formed here
Fallopian tubes
becomes erectile during sexual excitement (female)
Clitoris
duct extending superolaterally from the uterus
fallopian tubes
partially closes the vaginal canal; a membrane
hymen
produces ooctyes, estrogens, and progesterone
ovaries
fingerlike ends of the uterine tube
Fimbriae
Do any sperm enter the pelvic cavity of the female? why or why not?
Yes, because the female reproductive system is an open system.
What is an ectopic pregnancy, and ow can it happen?
Implantation that occurs outside the uterus
structures composing the external genitalia, or vulva, of the female
mons pubis, labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, vestibule, hymen, urethral opening, and vaginal opening
Put the vestibular-perineal structures in their proper order from the anterior to the posterior aspect.
Clitoris, urethral opening, vaginal orifice, anus
Clitoris is homologous to-
Penis
Common part of any physical exam of the male is palpation of the prostate gland. How is this accomplished?
Rectally
how might enlargement of the prostate interfere with urination or the reproductive ability of the male?
Restricts the urethra
Two principles functions of the tetstis
Sperm and testosterone
copulatory organ/penetrating device
Penis
Site of sperm/androgen production
Testes
Muscular passageway conveying sperm to the ejaculatory duct; in the spermatic cord
Ductus deferens or vas deferens
Transports both sperm and urine
Spongy urethra
Sperm maturation site
Epididymis
Location of the testis in adult males
Scrotum
Loose fold of skin encircling the glans penis
foreskin (prepuce)
portion of the urethra between the prostate gland and the penis
membranous urethra
empties a secretion into the prostatic urethra
prostate gland
empties a secretion into the membranous urethra
bulbourethral glands (cowper’s gland)
Why are the testes located in the scrotum rather than inside the ventral body cavity?
Difference in temperature
Trace the pathway of sperm from the testes to the urethra
Seminiferous tubule, rete testis, epididymis, ductus deferens
What are the 3 genes that can mutate, causing breast cancer?
BRCA1, BRCA2, P53
What is the purpose of an ultrasound during a breast examination?
It can determine if a lump is a fluid filled cyst or solid (and therefore possibly malignant)
What are the chemotherapeutic drugs available for breast cancer?
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex): An estrogens antagonist which blocks receptors, decreasing stimulating effects of estrogen on breast cells.
Herceptin: A monoclonal antibody drug which retards the growth of the disease by causing cellular regression.
Femara and Amimidex: Which are aromatase inhibitors which block the final steps in synthesis of estrogens.
