2
Q

Explain the causes of the Dust Bowl

A

Decades of commercial agriculture got rid of the Great Plain’s native vegetation.

Many farmers pushed water resources to the limits.
Grew wheat which did not protect the ground against high winds

Ranchers allowed livestock to overgraze, exhausting the topsoil

Q

Describe some of the effects of black blizzards

A

They carried tons of soil from the Great Plains to the East Coast

This filthy air damaged people’s lungs, causing “dust pneumonia”

Piles of dirt were shoveled out of houses and away from barns

Cars and tractors were ruined

Q

Describe the goal of the Civilian Conversation Service

A

Taught special methods of farming-such as contour plowing, limited tillage, and terracing
This reduced erosion and guarded the soil, which was the service’s overall goal.

Q

What was Uranium named after and where does it usually occur

A

Occurs chiefly in rocks, usually in extremely small concentrations

Named after the planet Uranus

Q

Explain the difference btw open pit mining and subsurface mining? (Ask Mr. Cavallaro)

A

Open pit mining

-Uses explosives to break rock and soil covering uranium near the earth’s surface.
-Miners dig blah holes, fill them with dynamite (or other explosives). -Afterwards they blow it up, power shovels clear the rubble away . Finally Smaller shovels dig out the uranium ore

Subsurface mining

-Used if uranium ore lies far beneath the earth’s surface.

-Mining companies dig tunnels into deposits
Miners drill into tunnel walls to install explosives (which loosen the ore)

-Miners They load the ore into buckets, which are hoisted to the surface

Describe what yellowcake uranium is

A

Where uranium is concentrated and purified to an oxide is called yellowcake

8
Q

Describe what enriched uranium is

A

Yellowcake (the oxide) is transported to a conversion plant and undergoes chemical reaction with fluorine.
The reaction produces uranium hexafluoride which goes to an enrichment plant (U-23 and U-238 are separated from each other, creation enriched uranium (has a high percentage of U-235 then most uranium

11
Q

Does the water table stay the same height? Why?

A

No, It goes up when it rains and down when there is a drought or for irrigation (dig a well, we use water)

12
Q

In which direction will the ground water move (from well 1 to 25 or from well 25 to 1)?

A

From 1 to 25 b/c the water will stall at the clay boundary and then gravity will move it down hill. (also indicated in table by the direction of the clay)

Q

Zone of saturation

A

Definition: Zone which is saturated with water ( all the blue in the graph

The underground area where water fills the spaces in the soil with water (saturated with water

16
Q

Unconfined aquifer

A

Define: Does not have boundaries (no clay, water on top of clay)

17
Q

Confined aquifer

A

Define: Aquifer that has boundaries (the one that has the clay over it) under

18
Q

Cone of depression

A

Define: Triangle goes down (under a urban area)
Roads and Cities don’t allow water to sit and percolate. Therefore, We block the aquifer from being refilled
We use a lot of water

19
Q

Region 1 Apalachicola River

A

Oyster farmers in bay
People use it for work

Dam’s main job is to control flow of river for Apalachicola City and provide electricity

River spreads flood lands nutrients to the side of the river (Biodiversity)

Concern with drought (low flow)
Dam may not be able to produce as much energy

Oysters will die off, due to too much or little salinity
Loss of jobs or business that rely on oysters

Flood plains aren’t able to spread as much nutrients
Loss of biodiversity

20
Q

Region 2 Flint River

A

A lot of farms use water from the flint river and Floridan Aquifer to irrigate (Use aquifers or rivers faster than they can refill, especially in times of drought )

Mussels help to clean the water since they are filter feeders (flow is too low they will not survive and waters will be murkier)

21
Q

Region 3 (Middle Chattahooche River/Columbus

A

Recreation (tied to tourism, money) (Fishing , kyacking)
Nuclear Power Plant
Printing Plant (Made wetland to filter water before it returns to river

Low flow
Decrease lake levels, less recreation, less tourist money, decrease in economy
Industry does not have enough wwater (will move) decrease in economy
Nuclear Powerplant will have to close down b/c lack of water to cool reactors

22
Q

Region 4 Lake Lanier Atlanta

A

Dam, was not supported by Atlanta
Main purpose was for flood control, navigation, and electricity (not for water use) They wanted to use it for that though
Only recently was it considered a water supply

Recreation

Low flow
Less recreation, failing business, lower economy
Dam will not make as much electricity, meaning less power for Atlanta
