Eco Mastery Qs Flashcards
What does the ecological footprint measure?
- How much earth it takes to give you resources
- How much earth it takes to absorb your waste
Using renewable resources sustainably
Use renewable resources slower than they can replace themselves
Limiting factors (for Growth of population)
Temperature
Light
Water and food
pH
Explain how adaptions help organisms in specific ecosystems
Mountain
Pine tree: Waxy Coating (Waxy coating on pine needles prevents moisture loss in dry air)
Mountain Goat: Strong Muscles (help the climb and dig through snow)
Urban FOrest
(Densely wooded area)
Vines: Twinging Stems (Help it wrap their stems around other organisms to get more sunlight)
Barn Owl: Silent flight (Soft body feathers that muffle sound which allows them to surprise their prey)
Explain what happens to the 90%
1- While the snake is watching the frog-the frog is using energy to hop away (energy that the snake will not be able to use)
2- Not al frogs get eaten by the snake
3-When the snake does catch that frog, it will not be able to fully digest it (and use all the energy)
Describe 3 specific movements of carbon through its matter cycle
o - Lithosphere to Atmosphere ( carbon is released through decomposition of dead organic matter in the soil and through the metabolic processes of soil microbes
o -Atmosphere to Hydrosphere (Carbon is absorbed by the ocean and other bodies of water)
o -Hydrosphere to Biosphere (Carbon is absorbed by marine plants and animals during photosynthesis
Lake
\A large body of water surrounded by land
Turtle: Shell (protects them from predators)
Lily Pads: Floating Leaves (Maximize sunlight for photosynthesis)
River
Torpedo shape
Helps them move against current
Strong roots
Plants have strong roots to keep them in place and bending stems
