Environmental Silver Unit 2 Flashcards
Forest are Biodiverse
Because they have such a variety of habitats
Range of Tolerance
THe range of conditions win which a species can withstand (species can live outside of those conditions
Generalist vs. Specialist
Generalist
Species can do a variety of things fairly well
Specialist
Species that can do 1 thing very well
Both can do it because of what it already has
Soil nutrient Levels
Tropical Rain Forest (Less nutrients b/c plants are constantly using it
Temperate Forest
(More nutrients because it has a period where it doesn’t use it (winter) and the rate of nutrient use is less (less plants)
High net primary productivity (what?)
The rate producers makes food for the Ecosystem (minus the food they take for themselves)
Estuaries (Why high primary productivity)
Rivers bring a lot of nutrients
Ocean and River’s currents mix up the nutrients so they don’t just settle to the bottom
This nutrients helps them make themselves
Biodiversity in Lakes
High diversity in shallow part of lakes because More different habitats =more different species (which shallow parts of the lake have, while the middle of the lake doesn’t
Wood (fallen trees, rock, vegetation,
Swamp
Cypress tree: Shallow roots (allow them to access nutrients near the surface)
Frog: Webbed Feet (helps them swim faster and longer)
Lake
\A large body of water surrounded by land
Turtle: Shell (protects them from predators)
Lily Pads: Floating Leaves (Maximize sunlight for photosynthesis)
River
Torpedo shape
Helps them move against current
Strong roots
Plants have strong roots to keep them in place and bending stems
