Unit 6 Flashcards
General Adaptation Syndrome
the body’s reaction when it cannot satsify the environment’s demands. Alarm stage, increase activity in sympathetic nervous system, adrenaline increases, you realise there is a problem and you do not have the means to solve it. You can choose to fight or flight. The second stage is resistance, where cortisol is in the parasympathetic nervous system and you are looking for ways to handle the situation. Lastly we have exhaustion, when the body starts to recover to its original state and the parasympathetic nervous system takes action. If we not cope, the stress will not go. Meaning we would never reach exhaustion causing chronic stress.
Vitamin model
job characteristics are like vitamins, the moe of these characteristics, the less probable you have stress. This model is inspired in PEfit and Michigan model. And there are characteristics like income, status and security which remain constant, while the rest decrease in time. This model is focused on well-being. And is handled by abilities, mental health and values .
Demand-control support model
You can achieve 4 different states reffering to demand and control. Active, passive, stress and no stress. Support is also important, as if someone else is living your same situation, you are not going to feel alone. The problem of this model is that it is subjective, has no clear individual differences, and dimensions are unclear.
Effort-reward Imbalance model
when you put high effort, but receive a low reward, there is going to be imbalance and stress will appear. However, effort can be extrinsic or intrinsic. Intrinsic effort would never be satisfied, you will have status inconsitency, and a work home conflict.
Job-demand resource model
there are 4 areas, social, organizational, physical and psychological. High demands but low resources, stress; low demands but high respurces eustress.
Demand-induced strain compensation model
there are physical, cognitive and emotional areas. If their demands are balanced with the resources, triple match theory, eustress. Compensation can also appear if one demand is compensated by another resource. If there is imbalance distress would appear .
