[Unit 5.2] | Phagocytosis Flashcards
1
Q
What is phagocytosis?
A
The process where phagocytes ingest and destroy pathogens.
2
Q
Describe the process of phagocytosis.
A
- Phagocyte is attracted to a pathogen by its chemical products (ie. toxins).
- Receptors on the phagocyte’s surface bind to chemicals on the pathogens surface
- Pathogen is engulfed into a vesicle called a phagosome.
- Lysosomes move toward & fuse with the phagosome.
- Lysozymes are released into the phagosome to hydrolyse the pathogen.
- Products of hydrolysis are absorbed into the cytoplasm of the phagocyte.
