Unit 5 - Plant Organs Flashcards
What is the function of the cuticle on the leaves and stems of plants?
The cuticle is a semi permeable waxy layer that protects the inside of plants and permeates gaseous exchange in plants
Differentiate between palisaide and spongy mesophyl
- Palisaide Mesophyl is columnar parenchyma - photosynthesis
* Spongy Mesophyl is rounded parenchyma - less photosynthesis
What are the functions of of roots in plants
- Transport
- Reproduction
- Anchorage
- Nutrient Uptake
- Storage
- Support
What occurs in the root Meristematic region?
The root elongates and new cells form
What is the function of root hairs?
Root hairs are specialised epidermal tissue that increase the surface area of the root. This allows for an increase in the absorption done by the plant
What is the stele of the root?
Th vascular bundle - xylem and phloem
Differentiate between the epidermis and endodermis.
- The epidermis is the outermost layer of a plant organ
* The endodermis is the innermost layer of the plant cortex
What is the function of the Casperian strip in the root?
The Casperian strip is a semipermeable layer between the Pericycle and Endodermis. It permeates water movement from the root cells to the root xylem.
What are the functions of the plant stem?
- Support
* Water and food conduction
What are the two main types of plant stems?
Herbaceous and Woody
What is the function of vascular Cambium in plant stems?
The Cambium annually forms new vascular tissue in the plant stem. The cambium will split to form phloem in the outer layer and xylem in the inner layer of the stem. This repeats until the plant’s death
Define Girdling.
Girdling is the cutting of the outer layer of the plant stem. This is dangerous for the plant as the phloem is eventually damaged. If the phloem is cut through, the plant will die
What is Dendrochronology?
The study of the age of plants to tell time, done by counting and reading the rings in the plant stem.
