flexes trunk (lumbar vertebrae) and compresses abdominal viscera; stabilizes and controls tilt of pelvis
internal oblique origin
thoracolumbar fascia, anterior 2/3 of iliac crest and connective tissue deep to lateral 1/3 of inguinal ligament
internal oblique insertion
inferior borders of 10-12th ribs, linea alba, and pectin pubis via falx inguinalis
internal oblique innervation
thoracoabdominal nerves T6-T12 ant rami and 1st lumbar nerves
internal oblique action
compression AND support of abdominal viscera; flexion and rotation of trunk
external oblique origin
external surfaces of 5th through 12th ribs
external oblique insertion
linea alba, pubic tubercle, and anterior 1/2 of iliac crest
external oblique innervation
thoracoabdominal nerves T7-T11 ant rami AND subcostal nerve
external oblique action
compression and support of abdominal viscera; flexion and rotation of the trunk
transversus abdominus origin
internal surfaces of 7th through 12th costal cartilages, thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest and connective tissue deep to lateral third of inguinal ligament
trans. abd. insertion
linea alba with aponeurosis of internal oblique, pubic crest and pecten pubis via conjoint tendon
trans abd. nerve
thoracoabdominal nerves T6-T12 and 1st lumbar
