Unit 5- Networking Fundamental Flashcards
Network
2 or more devices that can communicate
telecommunication
the process of exchanging information between various entities over electrical electromagnetic or digital networks
node
unique network address:
- data link control
- media access control
how does a network connect?
- wire: connects point to point
- wireless: network uses radio frequency signal instead of wires to connect your devices (radio waves)
- satellite communication: used to link telecommunication networks over long distances. (GPS, location, etc)
Topology Designs
- Fully connected Network
- common bus
- Mesh Network* Topology
- Star network*
- Ring network
Star network
each computer is connected to one hub, the change of one doesn’t impact the others
mesh networ
computers not connected together. not central hub. computer can go anywhere.
ISP-Internet service Provider
- provides internet
- IP address
- Provides connection to domain server that translates domains into addresses
client server relatioship
terminals are connected to a host central server that contains data requested, ones the request is made the server grabs the domain and sends back what the client requested.
Client: computer, laptop, phone, etc.
WAN
wide area network: covers a larger geographical areas using leased telecommunication circuits
LAN
Local area network: limited area such as school, house, etc
OSI model
open system inter connection model (7layers):
- application
- presentation
- session
- transport
- network
- data link
- physical
- computer to computer
- data is broken down into packets
- methodology for sending data packets
TCP/IP
Transmission control protocol
- application
- transport
- internet
- Network access
check digits
used for error detection in numbers when one thing is send from one computer to another computer
circuit switching
- entire message is passed
- there is a dedicated communication link
