Functions of the muscular system
makes body movement possible, holds body erect, move body fluids, produce body heat
skeletal muscle
attaches to bones, makes movement possible, are striated, are voluntary (conscious control)
smooth muscle
location: walls of internal organs, blood vessels, and ducts leading from glands, function: move and control the flow of fluids through these structures, un-striated, involuntary (automatic control)
cardiac muscles
loaction: only in the walls of the heart, function: make the heart beat, also known as myocardial muscle
fascia
cover, support and seperate muscles
tendons
attach muscles to bone
ROM
range of motion
ROM abduction
movement away from the midline of the body
ROM adduction
movement toward the midline of the body
ROM flexion
decreasing the angle between two bones
ROM extension
increasing the angle between bones
ROM supination
movement that turns the palm up
ROM pronation
movement that turns the palm down
ROM circumduction
circular movement of a joint
ROM rotation
moving a joint in, out, and around
