UNIT 5- ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM Flashcards
What are the two charges?
Positive and Negative charges
Which charge do PROTONS carry?
Positive
Which charge do ELECTRONS carry?
Negative
What made an object NEUTRAL?
The object carry an equal number of positive and Negative charge
What happens if Two Neutral Objects are rubbed againts each other?
May PULL electrons away from the opposite body; resulting in two objects with two opposite charge.
How can VALANCE ELECTRONS be transferred from one atom to another?
By rubbing two objects together
Facts: The object that gains electrons becomes negatively charged and contains More electrons than protons
(This is just a fact)
Facts: The object that loses electrons become positively charged and contains fewer electrons.
(This is just fact)
What is CHARGING BY INDUCTION?
When one CHARGED object is brought CLOSE to one NEUTRAL object. Causing the different charges to separate. EX: LEFT SIDE OF A BALL IS NEGATIVE, WHILE RIGHT SIDE IS POSITIVE.
What is the law of conservation of electrical charges?
Electrical charges can be neither created nor destroyed; They can only be transferred from one body to another.
What do LIKE charges do?
REPEL each other
What do OPPOSITE charges do?
ATTRACT each other.
Facts: Charged object attract some neutral object
(This is just a fact)
What is the path that electrons flow through?
Electrical Circuit
What is the continuous flow of electrons in a circuit is called?
Current electricity
What is Electric current?
The orderly flow of negative charges (electrons)
What is Direct current?
Electrons that continuously move in the same direction.
What is Alternative current?
Electrons change direction many times
What produce alternating current?
Power plants
What is Electrical circuit?
Network in which electrical charges can flow continuously in a loop.
What is the three things an electrical circuit must contain?
- Power Supply
- Elements
- Wires
What is Power Supply?
Creates a potential Difference or Transfers Energy to the electrical charges.
What is elements?
Transform electrical energy in other forms of energy (RESISTORS, LOADS)
What is Wires?
Connect the power supply and resistors.
What is Resistance?
A substance that opposes the flow of electric current through it.
Where does a magnet direct to?
ALWAYS from NORTH to SOUTH.
How do you know how strong a Magnet is?
The CLOSER the lines are the STRONGER the magnetic field
What is Magnetism?
All the phenomena caused by magnets
Where do the direction from the magnets go?
ALWAYS from NORTH to SOUTH
How can you determine the strength of a magnet?
It is shown by HOW CLOSE THE LINES ARE to each other. The CLOSER the lines of force are the STRONGER the magnetic field
