UNIT 3- MOLECULES AND SOLUTIONS Flashcards
What is Ions?
Particles that LOST or GAINED one or more electrons. As a result they carry POSITIVE or NEGATIVE charges.
What is Electrolytes?
Substances which enable ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY when dissolved in water (because they release positive and negative ions)
What is Electricitytic dissociation? (Also called electrolysis)
The process by which a substance dissociates into positive and negative ions (when dissolved in water).
What is the only chemical that form electrolytes? (Also called IONIC COMPOUNDS)
Acids, bases, and salts
What is the characteristics of an acids?
- Release H+
- Taste SOUR
- They kill GERMS
- They NEUTRALIZE bases
- Their pH < 7
- Turn blue litmus paper red
What is the formula for acids?
H- Nonmetal
H - Polyatomic ION
Example: HVCL, HNO3
What is the characteristics of Bases?
- Release OH- ions
- Taste BITTER
- Taste SLIPPERY
- They dissolved FATS
- They NEUTRALIZE acids
- Their pH > 7
- Turns Red litmus paper blue
What is the formula for Bases?
- Metal - OH
Ex: NaOH
What is a Solution?
A homogenous mixture made of solute and solvent
What is Solvent?
The Substance to which the solute is added, the bigger quantity
What is the Solute?
The substance that is dissolved, the smaller quantity
What is an Aqueous solution?
Solution in which the solvent is the water
