Unit 5 Definitions Flashcards
Joint Capsule
ligamentous sac that surrounds the articular cavity of the joint
Intracapsular
Proximal to attachment of joint capsule (within)
Extracapsular
distal to the capsule attachment (outside)
Displaced
removal from the normal articulating surface (separate)
Nondisplaced
w/in the normal articulating surfaces
avascular nercrosis
death of tissue due to lack of blood supply (esp. hip)
ORIF
Open Reduction Internal Fixation
surgical procedure to fix a severe bone fracture, or break. “Open reduction” means surgery is needed to realign the bone fracture into the normal position. “Internal fixation” refers to the steel rods, screws, or plates used to keep the bone fracture stable in order to heal the right way and to help prevent infection.
Arthroplasty
joint replacement - operative procedure to reshape or reconstruct a diseased joint
Hybrid
cemented and uncemented fixation
THA/THR
Total Hip Arthroplasty/Replacement
TKA/TKR
Total Knee Arthoplasty/Replacement
ACL
prevents anterior displacement of tibia on femur
PCL
prevents posterior displacement of tibia on femur
MCL
helps prevent valgus deformity of knee
Cryotherapy
therapeutic use of cold aka ICE
