Unit 5: Cellular resp. Flashcards
What is cell division or cellular reproduction?
The splitting of one parent into two genetically identical daughter cells.
What is asexual reproduction?
Cell divison that results in the reproduction of a whole organism.
What is sexual reproduction?
Reproduction that requires the fusion of gametes.
What are gametes?
Egg and sperm cells
What is a zygote?
A fertilized egg,
What is binary fission?
Dividing in half
What is cell division in prokaryotes?
Binary fission
What are the types of eukaryotic cell divison?
Mitosis and meiosis.
What is mitosis?
-allows for growth and maintanance of multicellular organisms and asexual reproduction.
What is meiosis?
Allows for the priduction of egg adn sperm cells and sexual reproduction.
What are chromosomes?
A single long strand of DNA hundreds or thousands of genes long.
What is a chromatin?
The structure of DNA and its associated proteins.
What are sister chromatids?
The two copies of each chromosome.
What is a centromere?
The region where sister chromatids are closely attached.
What is the cell cycle?
An ordered sequence of events from the instant a cell is formed to the moment it divides into new daughter cells.
