Unit 4: Energy Generation Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
Energy, Carbon dioxide and water to produce organic molecules and oxygen.
What is reactants and products involved in cellular respiration?
Organic molecucles and oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, water and energy.
What is Respiration?
The exchange of gases.
What is cellular respiration?
The aerobic harvesting of energy from organic molecules.
What are exergonic reactions?
Reaction that produces or releases energy.
How is the atp in your body devided?
-75% of it is used for life sustaining activities
-25% of it goes to voluntary activites.
What is Kcal?
The quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by 1 celsius.
What is the basal metabolic rate?
The minimum amount of calories needed in a day to maintain all the activities.
What is a redox reaction?
The transfer of electrons from one reactant to another.
What is oxidation?
The loss of electrons.
What is reduction?
The gain of electrons.
What is dehydrogenase?
Enzyme that oxidizes the organic fuel molecule.
What is substrate level phosphorylation?
The process by which ATP is produced in glycolysis.
What are intermediates?
The compounds formed in the steps between the starting reactants and the final product.
What is chemiosmosis?
The potential energy of the H+ concentration gradient is used to make ATP.
