Unit 5 3-5 Flashcards
What’s Diffraction gratings?
A series of closely spaced lines that split light into a spectrum
What are the three types of spectrums?
- emission/bright light spectrum
- Coloured spectrum
- Absorption/dark lines spectrum
Explain emission/bright light spectrum
A dark spectrum with bright lines. When a gas is heated at low pressure
Explain a absorption/ dark line spectrum?
A coloured spectrum with black lies through it. This is when it passes through a gas or cooler gas.
Explain coloured spectrum
This is a a coloured spectrum. When as is heated at high pressure
What’s the Doppler effect?
Changing pitch when the objects closer and further from you
What waves are effected by the Doppler effect?
Light waves & sound waves
What can the Doppler effect tell us about stars?
Where they are and where they are moving
What’s a red shift and a blue shift?
Red shift: moving further away
Blue shift : moving closer
What are adaptive optics?
They remove the twinkling of the stars
What causes the twinkling of stars?
When the light reaches the atmosphere it refracts and that’s why we see twinkling
What’s triangulation?
When you make a triangle and make a scale and calculate how far something is (sometimes stars )
What’s a light year?
How far light travels in one year (ruffly 63 00 AU)
What’s an astronomical unit?
Unit that’s accurate for measuring distances in space
What’s electromagnet radiation
Using waves from celestial bodies that aren't sound to determine where they are Example: X-rays Gamma rays UV Rays Micro waves
