Topic 1 Flashcards
Particle model of matter ??
- All matter I made up of extremely tiny particles
- each pure substance has its own kind of particles of other pure substances
- particles attract each other
- Particles are always moving
- higher temperature = faster movement & lower temperature = slower movement
What are the 2 types of mixtures and explain
Homogeneous - mixture that seems the same & Heterogeneous - you an clearly see the different parts
What are three types of heterogeneous mixtures and explain
- Ordinary Mechanical mixtures - parts are clearly different and separated
- Suspension - larger particles that are uniformly mixed but will eventually settle
- Colloid - Fine particles evenly distributed through out a second substance
What is a pure substance and the two types?
A pure substance that contains one kind of Particle. Element & Compound
What’s an element ?
A pure substance made up of one type or particle, cannot be broken down into simpler substances
What’s a compound ?
A pure substance made up of two or more elements chemically joined together
What’s a physical property and examples?
Any property that can be observed or measured without forming a new substance , example colour, texture and smell
What is qualitative and quantitative ?
Qualitative -described but not measured (quality) colour, smell ect..
Quantitative - can be measured numerically ( quantity )
What is Chemical properties ?
Describes how a substance will react with another substance. How it reacts with water, with air, with acid ect..
Matter can come in _____ , _______ and ________.
Solid, liquids and gasses
Solid liquids and gasses can be separated in 2 groups, what are they?
Mixtures & pure substances
An emulsion is a type of?
Colloid
