Chemistry 7-8 Flashcards
Enzyme?
Breaks things down
Catalyst?
A substance added to speed up rate of reaction
Inhibitors ?
A substance added to slow speed of the rate of reaction
Corrosive ??
Oxidation of metals and rocks in the presence of air and moisture
Combustion?
Highly exothermic reaction, a combination of the substance with oxygen
5 ways to increase rate of reaction ?
- Add heat
- Agitation (stirring)
- Increase surface area
- Increase the concentration of reaction
- Add a cation
What’s corrosive?
Rusting. Oxidation of metals in the presence of air and moisture (salt speeds up rusting) and iron and oxygen are reactants that promote it
What’s combustion? And products of combustion ?
Carbon dioxide, and it’s a highly exothermic reaction, a combination of the substance with oxygen (required heat)
What’s endothermic ?
Chemical reactions that gives off energy, ex. fire
What’s exothermic ?
Chemical reaction that absorbs energy (heat) ex. Cooking
What are reactants ?
Chemicals mixed together to create something else ex hydrogen + oxygen-hydrogen monoxide (hydrogen + oxygen)
What are products?
Substances produced by a chemical reaction ex. Hydrogen + oxygen - hydrogen monoxide (hydrogen monoxide)
Example of a word equation?
Magnesium + oxygen - magnesium oxide + light (this would be exothermic)
What are the symbols used for these reactants? Solid, liquid, gas, Aquious
Solid - (s)
Liquid - (l)
Gas - (g)
Aquious- (aq)
