Q

What is DDT? Positives? Negatives?

A

it is a chemical used to kill diseases on people during the second world war because they couldn’t shower or clean.
Positives-it kills off what you want it to kill off
Negatives - eventually it will harm things that weren’t intended to

15
Q

What does PH value tell us?

A

Indicates If it’s a base or acid and if it’s a strong or weak acid/base. using numbers

16
Q

What does neutralizing mean?

A

To make sure that there is an equal balance of acids and bases in a lake. If there’s more acid (an acidified lake) add more bases. If it had more bases in it (basic lake) add more acids

17
Q

What is and what does universal indicator paper tell us????

A

It changes colour and tell you the exact PH value of a substance

18
Q

What’s lining?

A

A type of neutralizing when you add calcium carbonate(example of a base) to an acidified lake, to make it neutral (think zero pairs)

19
Q

What’s a catalyst?

A

It’s something you add to a reaction to make it go faster

20
Q

What’s oxidation?

A

Mixing things with oxygen, like rusting

21
Q

What’s a scrubber?

A

Something that’s in a factory and basically filters the amount of pollution that escapes the building by using a scrubber. Inside the scrubber there is a sorbent that absorbs carbon dioxide “cleaning” the pollutants

22
Q

What’s a catalyst converter ?

A

Helps to get rid of pollutants (example: a scrubber (I think) )

23
Q

What does phosphorous help with in the body?

A

Promotes proper bone formation, regulates metabolism, forms compounds that store energy

24
Q

What does potassium do to the body?

A

It helps regulate nerve signals and muscle activity , involved in protein formation, required to regulate and acids/ bases balance

25
Q

What does iodine do to the body?

A

Major component of thyroid hormones which regulates metabolism

26
Q

What does iron do to the body?

A

It crucial part of red blood cells that regulate oxygen transportation

28
Q

what chemicals are contained in fertilizers and what part of the plant are they improving?

A

nitrogen- leaves of plants

phosphorous- roots of plants

potassium- flowers of plants

29
Q

what are the requirements of organic farming practices?

A

to only use natural chemicals, all chemicals need to be biodegradable, non carcinogenic, doesn’t accumulate, reduces pests and to be economical.

29
Q

how is acid precipitation made and what is it? and what are its effects?

A

*

31
Q

how is acid precipitation made and what is it? and what are its effects?

A

it is rain that is very acidic, it affects the aquatic ecosystem and reduces productivity of crops and harms other vegetation. it effects the decay of buildings, and affects the industries of forestry, fishing, agriculture, tourism and construction.
