Unit 4.4: The behavioral approach and social learning theory Flashcards
Situationism
if behavior differs from one situation to another,it must be situational factors that determine behavior
Person-Situation interaction
Personality traits interact with situational forces to produce behavior
What are the 3 types of learning?
Classical conditioning (S-O Associations)
Operant conditioning (consequences of actions)
Observational conditioning (observing consequences of the actions of others)
What does social learning theory focus on and what is it concerned with?
focus on social factors shaping personality
concerned with:
- processes by which individuals learn from social models
- models to which all people are exposed
- content of social learning
Modelling/ observational learning
process through which the behavior of one person changes as a result of seeing the behavior of another
(can be live or symbolic modelling)
Vicarious consequences
observed outcomes of a model’s behavior
-> infer outcomes others are likely to receive in similar situations
vicarious reinforcement
consequences of a model seen as desirable
vicarious punishment
consequences seen as undesirable
Does the acceptance (similarity) of the model play a role in observational learning?
yes
Selection
social selections permeate life
range from trivial to profound
Does your partner’s personality influence marital satisfaction?
yes, people with partners high on Agreeableness, Emotional Stability and Intellect-Openness were especially happy
->differences in scores however did not predict martial satisfaction
Evocation
the responses/ behaviors we generate in others
Expectancy confirmation
expectations on people effect their behavior in a way that’s consistent with the initial beliefs
