Jewel of the Crown
The British considered India to be the ´Jewel of their crown´ because of its resources, location, and people.
Suez Canal
A human-made canal in Egypt that Britain and France fought over because of Britain’s need for it to maintain control over the Middle East/India
Social Darwinism
Survival of the fittest¨- some people get power because they’re innately better.
Protectorate
(Indirect) Local government officials were “allowed” to remain in power, but the style of government is based on European structure.
Racism
The belief that a particular race is superior to others- used by colonists to justify their actions
Imperialism
When rich/powerful countries control lots of smaller countries (Britain and Asia/Africa)
Sphere of Influence
When an outside power claims rights and privileges over an area or region.
Colony
The most direct form of control, when a powerful nation installs its own government and maintains direct control over other territories and regions.
Boer
Dutch Farmers who settled in South Africa and fought Britain for diamonds/gold found on the land.
Paternalism
The government limiting what you’re allowed to do for your own betterment/safety (ex: you have to wear a seatbelt by law for your own protection- British ¨civilizing¨ other p;aces for their own betterment because they were seen as inferior)
Assimilation
Pushing their culture and beliefs on weaker countries.
