UNIT 4 - SEPSIS DIC Flashcards
The body’s overwhelming and life-threatening response to infection that can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. In other words, it’s your body’s over active and toxic response to an infection.
HIGH RISK POPULATIONS:
- cancer (b/c of treatment - affects immune system)
- diabetes (alters immune response)
- age ( decrease immune response)
sepsis
what population is at a high risk for sepsis?
- infants (especially very low birth weight of those who have had an invasive procedures)
- first days of life 60%
- elderly (especially over 80 years of age)
what are risk factors for sepsis?
- chronic diseases
- immunosuppression
- burns/wounds
- long term catheters (urinary tract is supposed to be sterile)
- long term antibiotics (kids with chronic ear infections)
- malnourished (ETOH/substance abuse/elderly/obese/anorexic)
- dehydrated (elderlly/infants)
- UTI (poor hygiene, improper peri care, backflow of urine, improper drainage)
one of the leading causes in death in hospitalized patients. and the most common complication after an invasive procedure
sepsis
most common can live and be transported through air, water, food, soil, body tissues or body fluids and inanimate objects.
bacteria
consist primarily of nucleic acid and therefore must enter living cells to reproduce.
viruses
include yeast and molds
fungi
live on other organisms (protozoa, worms and mites, fleas, ticks)
parasites
no other organ involvement, and the inflammatory response is helpful. (localized)
infection
other organs involved. inflammatory response is harmful.
systemic (sepsis)
what is the criteria for SIRS?
- tachypnea
- tachycardia (heart rate greater than 90 bpm)
- elevated temperature (100.4 or greater or below 96.8)
- > than 12000 or <4000 WBCs
- respiratory rate greater than 20 breaths per min
SIRS + ______ = ________
infection, sepsis
