unit 4 political power and territoriality Flashcards
neocolonialism
the use of economic, political, cultural, or other pressure to control or influence other countries today, especially former dependencies (colonialism today)
shatterbelt
a zone of great cultural complexity typically in mountainous terrain and bordered by strong, opposing outside forces
Ex: Balkan Peninsula (former Yugoslavia), Caucasus Mountains (Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan)
choke point
a narrow, strategic passageway to another place through which it is difficult to pass
Ex: Strait of Hormuz (most of the world’s oil passes through here), Suez Canal (its blockage stopped world trade for a long time), Strait of Malacca (why Singapore has such a good situation)
territoriality
the desire for power over land
