state
a country. Must have: define borders, permanent population, government, sovereignty, and be recognized by others
nation-
a cultural group, with strong ties
Ex: Islamic nation, Jewish nation
nation-state
a state made up of one nation (cultural group), 100% ethnically homogeneous.
Ex: NO TRUE NATION-STATES. Pretty close: Japan, Iceland, Estonia, Slovenia, Denmark
stateless nation
a nation (cultural group) without a state of their own
Ex: Kurds, Native Americans, Tibetans, Palestinians
multinational state
A country with multiple ethnicities, and these ethnicities have feelings of self-determination (they are not happy with being in that country)
Ex: Russia, Canada, United Kingdom, Spain
multistate nation
A nation (cultural group) that is spread across multiple states (countries), typically a majority/heavy presences in all countries they are in
Ex: Koreans, Russians, Germans
autonomous region
a region within a country that is not completely sovereign but does have a great level of autonomy (independence)
Ex: Hong Kong
semi-autonomous region
a region within a country that is not completely sovereign but does have some level of autonomy (independence), not as much as autonomous
Ex: Native Americans
