What is physical development?
The growth of the body and the development of bodily movements and functions
What is emotional development?
The ability to develop, manage and express feelings.
Ability to show consideration and empathy for the feelings of others
What is cognitive development?
The ability to recognise, remember and problem solve.
Learning and developing language and communication
What is social development?
Building relationships.
Interacting with others.
Learning how to behave
What is the difference between growth and development?
Growth is increasing in size whilst development is maturing in sone way
What does Milestone mean?
Significant stages or developments
What does Norm mean?
When milestones are typically achieved
What does Degeneration mean?
stopping growing, slowing down or stopping working as well
What is holistic development?
How the individual develops as a whole person with all areas of development - physical, emotional, cognitive, social
What is interdependency?
All areas of development need to work alongside each other
What is the nature argument for development?
All characteristics are inherited from parents
Disease and illness can be passed to children and these diseases can impact development
What is the nurture argument for development?
Characteristics are influenced environment and experiences. Lifestyle, relationships, socio-economic, culture and physical environment.
What is a lifestyle influence?
How you live your life: Drinking, smoking, exercising, drugs etc
What is a socio-economic influence?
How money and privilege can change outcomes: Able to afford a nice house with a garden, being able to afford healthy food, having foreign holidays, having a good education etc

How others you know can influence you: Parents, friends, teachers etc
What is a cultural influence?
How the values and traditions you are part of can influence development: Religious diet, not being able to be seen by a doctor of opposite sex etc
What is a physical environment influence?
How your immediate surroundings can influence your development: Pollution, damp house, open countryside etc
What is a transition?
The change from one state to another. A life event
What is an expected transition or life event?
Something that pretty much happens to everybody
What is an unexpected transition or life event?
Something that surprises you and doesn’t always happen to everybody
What areas can life events or transitions have an individual?
Physical and mental health changes
Relationship changes
Life chances improve or decline
Independence changes
